Sacred Land Rematriated to Grand Bayou Indian Village

On Friday, September 20th, 2024, Grand Bayou Indian Village was gifted with the return of one of our sacred mounds. "Lemon Tree" mound has been returned to the ownership of its people. The graciousness of the Episcopal Diocese made this possible; upon learning that they held among their land holdings, an area located in Bay Adams that comprised of a remnant mound, held sacred by the tribal people of the Grand Bayou Indian Village, they began to set in motion a process whereby the Diocese would "Rematriate" the site back into the possession of the Tribe (Atakapa Ishak Chawasha).

At the rematriation event on Friday.

This is Unprecedented! History is filled with occurrences of the exact opposite; where land has been taken from the People (under the guise of various reasons). Today we celebrate with our ancestors in the return of our lands...we hope that this will be the first of many such occurrences...we will work towards the goal of rematriating land.
