Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary is facing a possible merger with Montegut elementary school. Community members spoke out against the merger at a school board committee meeting on Tuesday night, and the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribal Council has issued a statement in opposition to the merger. From the statement: "Terrebonne Parish is considering closure of a school that serves as a pillar of hope and opportunity for many facing dire circumstances – poverty, coastal erosion, and effects of hurricanes […] PAC Elementary has the highest percentage of Native American students in the parish and the highest percentage of families who speak French. PAC School uses federal Indian Education funds to provide much-needed individualized support for Native American children." The Tribal Council has instead advocated that the school transition to a language immersion school.
