Lowlander Center and the regional Tribes are asking that the state allocate their surplus computer equipment for use in the rural areas. As many of life’s essential functions have moved online in response to corona-virus, computer access is essential for adults to work from home and school and college students to do virtual classes and extended learning projects. Many of the folks in these rural communities have traditionally relied on public libraries for their internet connection, computer use and printer availability. With libraries closed and transportation limited, we are calling on the state to take bold measures to ensure that rural areas are provided access to these basic functions of life. We are calling on the state to offer regional internet service and to release surplus equipment to rural communities of need across the state.
Additionally, the Lowlander Center has signed onto a letter calling for an upfront exclusion for repayment as well as a simplified application process for SBA Loans for very small in-home or mom/pop businesses.
